Fake bill or cancellation call: three steps

Hang up, then ring the number printed on your bill or shown in the provider's app.
  1. Stop. Don't read out a code, password or card number while the caller is on the line, however urgent it sounds.
  2. Check. Contact the company yourself using the number on your bill or in its app, not one the caller or a text gave you.
  3. Block and report. Block the number and tell your provider.
Switching and cancelling
  • A call you started, such as ringing to switch or cancel, may ask you to confirm your name, address and account details.
  • A call you didn't start that asks for a one-time code, password or card details is the one to end.
Warning signs on any provider call
  • Payment by gift card, crypto or a transfer to a personal account
  • A threat to disconnect you within minutes
  • A request to take over your phone or computer remotely
